Over the weekend, the No. 2 LSU Tigers traveled to Austin to take on the No. 8 Texas Longhorns in a three-game series. Here’s what went down in all three games:
Game 1
In the series opener at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday, LSU secured an 8-2 victory over Texas, extending their winning streak to 17 games.
Tigers’ left-hander Kade Anderson delivered a stellar performance, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits, with no walks and eight strikeouts, improving his record to 5-0.
LSU’s offense was led by catcher Luis Hernandez, who went 3-for-4, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning, contributing three RBIs. First baseman Jared Jones added two hits and two RBIs, while left fielder Derek Curiel and right fielder Josh Pearson each recorded a hit and an RBI.
The Longhorns took a 1-0 lead in the third inning with shortstop Jalin Flores’ RBI single. However, the Tigers responded in the fourth when Hernandez’s two-run homer shifted the momentum.
LSU extended its lead with runs in the fifth and seventh innings, capitalizing on Texas’ pitching struggles. Reliever Zac Cowan earned his second save, pitching three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Longhorns starter Jared Spencer suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings, with three walks and seven strikeouts. Texas catcher Rylan Galvan hit a solo home run in the sixth, marking his eighth of the season.
This win improved the Tigers’ record to 22-1, marking their best start since 1986.
Game 2
In a high-scoring Saturday affair, Texas overcame multiple deficits to defeat LSU 11-7, allowing them to even the series. The Longhorns showcased resilience, rallying from behind three times.
The Tigers struck first, scoring two in the fourth inning. They added three more in the fifth, highlighted by Jared Jones’ RBI double and Steven Milam’s sacrifice fly, taking a 5-2 lead.
Texas responded in the bottom of the fifth, with catcher Rylan Galvan delivering a three-run homer, his ninth of the season, to give the Longhorns a 6-5 lead. LSU briefly regained the lead in the sixth thanks to left fielder Derek Curiel’s two-run homer.
Texas answered back in the seventh, as shortstop Jalin Flores homered to tie the game, and center fielder Will Gasparino’s RBI single put the Longhorns ahead for good. They added insurance runs in the eighth, with Flores and first baseman Kimble Schuessler each contributing RBI singles.
Texas reliever Max Grubbs earned the win, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Freshman Dylan Volantis secured the save with 1.1 scoreless innings. LSU reliever Connor Benge took the loss, surrendering two runs on three hits over 1.2 innings.
After Anthony Eyanson was pulled in the fifth, the bullpen allowed nine runs, five walks, nine hits and two home runs the rest of the night. Head coach Jay Johnson ended up using seven different relievers throughout the night.
The loss ended LSU’s 17-game winning streak, bringing it to 22-2.
Game 3
The Tigers dropped the series finale 6-2 to Texas on Sunday afternoon, suffering its first series loss of the season. The Longhorns took control early and never surrendered the lead, riding a steady pitching performance and timely hits to claim the weekend.
Texas opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first off LSU starter Chase Shores. Jared Thomas ripped an RBI double to right, and Kimble Schuessler followed with a run-scoring single to make it 2-0. Shores settled down to throw 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, two runs, and recording three strikeouts.
The Tigers tied the game in the top of the sixth, breaking up a shutout bid from Longhorns starter Chris Stuart. LSU loaded the bases, and Steven Milam drew a walk to plate the Tigers’ first run. Luis Hernandez followed with an RBI groundout to even score 2-2. But Texas responded immediately.
In the bottom half of the inning, Dylan Campbell delivered an RBI single to put the Longhorns back on top. Texas added two more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to stretch their lead. Longhorns reliever Charlie Hurley picked up the win with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. At the same time, Andre Duplantier II earned the save.
The Tigers were held to just five hits and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Texas improved to 19-3 and handed LSU its first back-to-back losses of 2025.
