After seeing her peers mess up their lives by driving drunk, a senior in student government introduced a bill that she hopes will stop others from making the same mistake. The bill asks LSU to install breathalyzer stations at residence halls and the student health center for home football games.
The bill is called SGB 7. If it goes through, come football season students will be able to go to select residence halls and the student health center to self-administer breathalyzer tests.
The bill was introduced on March 19 by Paris Holman. Holman is a senator in the College of Coast and Environment in the student government.
She chose dorms and the Student Health Center as locations for these tests because she thinks they are the places students are most likely to cross on game days. Holman says dorms are usually the first place students go before going out after the games and many students walk past the health center when walking to the games.
The breathalyzers would not only show students their blood alcohol level but would also tell the student how long it will take for them to be sober.
Holman says the bill wasn’t made to punish students for drinking, but to encourage them to make good choices.
She hopes that once students see how intoxicated they are after taking the breathalyzer tests, it will discourage them from drunk driving.
“So my hope is that the breathalyzers really serve as like, a preventative measure from you making a life-altering decision,” Paris Holman said.
Holman hopes this bill will serve as a legacy after she graduates.
