LSU Softball’s bats were on fire Friday evening, despite a rain delay to start the night. The Tigers faced off against the South Carolina Gamecocks in the first game of their three-game series at Tiger Park. LSU finished the first inning with four runs, thanks to catcher Maci Bergeron, who hit a three-run homer to open the game.
Head Coach Beth Torina credited her coaching staff for getting the team ready for this matchup.
“My staff just does such a good job preparing them. So much information, such a good week of prep. Tells them the right things, gives them the right drills, which I think gives them a ton of confidence to step in there,” Beth Torina said.
The momentum carried throughout the rest of the game as LSU put up 11 runs in five innings, triggering the mercy rule and ending the game early. Redshirt freshman Tori Edwards contributed with a grand slam in the second inning, showcasing her explosive hitting ability.
LSU pitcher Sydney Berzon kept the Gamecocks in check at the plate, striking out four batters with no walks. She allowed only three runs on five hits.
Coach Torina also spoke on how much of a weapon Berzon is for the team.
“Overall, I just thought [Sydney] was awesome tonight. I saw a lot of good things that shes been trying to do for a bit,” Torina said.
South Carolina finally got on the board in the fifth inning, scoring three runs before the game was called. However, it wasn’t enough for a comeback.
With this win, LSU improves to 31-2 overall and 6-1 in the SEC. The Tigers and Gamecocks will meet again on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Tiger Park for the second game of the series, where LSU will look to extend its winning streak.
