Spring Break is the perfect time to relax and read a book. Whether you are going to the beach, a lake, the city or just plan on having a staycation, here are some book recommendations to keep you busy.
Beach Read by Emily Henry
“Beach Read” by Emily Henry is a book I probably add to a majority of my recommendations because it sets the perfect scene to get readers ready for summer. The story follows a romance writer, January Andrews, who finds herself in a severe writer’s block. To try and fix it, she spends the summer in a beach house neighboring literary fiction author Augustus Everett, her polar opposite.
This novel is the perfect one to start while sitting in a beach chair or imagining you’re in one. It doesn’t go too far with the cheesiness that can be seen in a lot of romance, but still has that sweet aspect to it.
If you can’t get enough of the character’s from “Beach Read,” Henry has plenty of other books like “People We Meet on Vacation,” “Happy Place,” “Book Lovers” and “Funny Story” that all have equally lovable characters and stories.
Done and Dusted by Lyla Sage
“Done and Dusted” by Lyla Sage is the first book in the Rebel Blue Ranch Trilogy. It follows Emmy Ryder as she ventures back to her small hometown in Wyoming after a terrible accident keeps her from doing her favorite thing: riding horses.
While back at home, she runs into her older brother’s best friend Luke Brooks who she may or may not end up having feelings for. The book is the perfect balance of sweet romance while also touching on aspects of family and mental health. It’s on the shorter side so it makes for the perfect book to get done in a day and get someone out of a reading slump.
Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins
The second prequel to the famous “Hunger Games” series is finally out, following Katniss’ mentor Haymitch Abernathy. The story takes place during his game, which has double the tributes. Not only does it give readers a better look at a beloved character, but it also ties together many story lines from “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the other prequel released by Collins in 2020.
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
If you are looking to get into a series and have a deep love for fantasy, “A Darker Shade of Magic” is the perfect book. This is the first book of the “Shade of Magic” series, written by V.E. Schwab, who is also known for her bestseller “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.”
The series follows multiple different worlds as they face the responsibility of having magic, not having magic and having too much magic. This first book gives an introduction to each world: Red London, Grey London, White London and Black London, along with Kell, who is responsible for traveling from each other to try and maintain some sort of balance. It is the perfect mix of fantasy with a touch of real world problems that keeps the story going.
A Door in the Dark by Scott Reintgen
This young adult fantasy novel is the perfect book to read during your vacation if you are not looking to commit to a 800 page novel. It has the perfect amount of world-building and storylines as it is also the first book of a trilogy.
The story follows Ren, a graduate student in a mythical world called Kathor. Ren is a lower-class resident who attends magic college up in the clouds in a place called The Heights. There, she is working on proving herself to one of the five houses in power so she can get a job. She is top of her class and there is only one thing in her way: her social standing.
Readers follow Ren and other characters after they accidentally get sent to the most dangerous part of the woods on their way home for break. It is a new and unique take on fantasy that is very easy to follow and a quick read for a day at home.
