Despite not displaying their usual form on Tuesday night, LSU secured a mid-week win over Louisiana Tech at Alex Box Stadium.
Coming off a grueling weekend series that stretched into late hours, the Tigers managed nine hits off an unmatched Bulldogs’ pitching staff.
LSU’s two mightiest swings of the night were both solo out-of-the-park home runs. Jared Jones’ hit his 10th home run of the season in the second inning before Ethan Frey’s sixth in the fifth. The dynamic duo provided the Tigers with a commanding 6-1 lead.
LSU endured a taxing sweep over SEC rival Mississippi State two days ago. The Tigers were pushed to the limit, forced to endure multiple extra-inning, high-intensity battles over the past two weeks. With such little recovery time, it was about time that their wear and tear caught up with them.
The pitching staff did well enough to secure the win, but they weren’t immune to struggles.
LSU starter Cooper Williams labored through two innings with no strikeouts before turning it over to Tigers teammate Mavrick Rizy. The relievers kept the Bulldogs in check, but it wasn’t dominant. Louisiana Tech’s Zeb Ruddell and Brody Drost, two former LSU players, hit two separate home runs against Tigers pitchers William Schmidt and DJ Primeaux, respectively.
With LSU head coach Jay Johnson rotating eight pitchers, fatigue was bound to set in. The Tigers’ relievers had trouble locating their pitches late but still held Louisiana Tech to only three runs.
Even if it didn’t result in a run-rule, LSU beat the Bulldogs 12-3.
The Tigers will travel to play Oklahoma in a three-game series starting on Thursday night.
