On a day when it would typically be players speaking in the press conference, LSU Football Head Coach Brian Kelly met with the media after spring practice instead to give the team more time to grieve former wide receiver Kyren Lacy after his tragic passing last Saturday.
Lacy was a teammate and friend of many of the current players, and Coach Kelly described who he was to honor his memory.
“Kyren was a bright star,” Kelly said. “He had an incredible personality. I’ll remember him as somebody that had a love for the game, a love for being a Tiger and a guy who played with great emotion.”
“When you think of Kyren, you’re gonna smile most of the time because of the way he handled himself,” Kelly said. “He was a guy that was full of energy and I think a lot of his teammates will remember him that way as well.”
Kelly also mentioned his pleasure with the current roster and that he does not expect to be active in the transfer portal, which opens on Wednesday.
“I like what we’ve done with this roster and the development of it,” Kelly said. “Not all of that is in my control obviously, but I can tell you we’re not actively saying we gotta have this, we gotta have that. We feel good about our roster.”
With spring practice wrapping up this week, Coach Kelly summarized their progress and looked ahead to the summer and what he wants the team to accomplish then.
“The players hold each other to a standard,” Kelly said. “That’s where this team really starts to take off. Coaches aren’t out there to look over you. You’ve got to do it on your own. How far you want to take this happens in June and July.”
After summer, the Tigers will look ahead to Fall Camp which will begin in August.
