A Louisiana state representative has proposed a resolution that seeks to put an end to LSU football day games through September to alleviate heat exhaustion concerns.
Rep. John Illg, Jr. proposed in HCR13 that every LSU home game before October should start at 6 p.m. or later.
The resolution cites “health and safety reasons related to the heat during day games” as the need for the adjusted game times.
The bill comes after a dangerously hot 2:30 p.m. football game between LSU and UCLA last September ignited conversations about fan safety.
In September, an LSU spokesperson told the Reveille that there were 58 heat-related medical assists made during that game, a “moderate uptick” from the norm, he said.
The heat index at the game was 100 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service. The ABC broadcast for the game said the temperature of the turf field was around 130 degrees.
If the resolution does pass, it will represent an official recommendation from the Louisiana Legislature, as television networks ultimately decide when games will take place.
“We would always prefer to play those games at night,” said senior associate AD and chief communications officer Zach Greenwell in September. “We’re not the only one with the same preference.”
