The dean of students reinstated the Foret-Tatman: Forward campaign for Student Government for the second time Thursday, officially saving the ticket from disqualification.
Dean of Students Fran’Cee Brown-McClure relieved the campaign of seven of their tallied penalty points, but still assessed the campaign 10 points for misreporting campaign spending – enough to remain disqualified. However, Brown-McClure reinstated the ticket after finding the violations arose from advice given by the chair of the election commission on how to log campaign donations.
“The campaign’s documented reliance on the Commissioner’s guidance – particularly in good faith – does not excuse violations, but it does mitigate culpability and reveals institutional ambiguity in how financial rules are communicated and enforced,” Brown-McClure said in her statement.
Brown-McClure also said that although members of the ticket signed the campaign’s financial reporting forms, there was no evidence that individual candidates were solely responsible for managing the documents, prompting her to reinstate all the campaign’s candidates.
The campaign was disqualified earlier this month after the Election Court found the campaign had listed several donated items as $0, despite SG Code requiring them to be reported at market value.
Foret-Tatman: Forward submitted its appeal 10 days before the dean reinstated the campaign.
The ticket was also previously disqualified last month for alleged bribery. The dean of students reinstated the ticket after State Sens. Alan Seabaugh, R-Shreveport, and Gregory Miller, R-Norco and State Rep. Dixon McMakin, R-Baton Rouge lobbied for the campaign.
It is unclear when election results will be announced.
