After the Tigers beat the Tennessee Volunteers 12-2 on a heated weekend series, LSU proved that they got their rhythm back on both ends of the field.
“This team early in the year we set a very high var for the offense in baseball,” Head Coach Jay Johnson said. “Relative to today I would say we played in what I would call our best character.”
One player that really made a statement was freshman pitcher Casan Evans. It was his first ever starting appearance in not only an SEC game, but in college baseball as a whole. But he didn’t show his lack of experience on the mound.
Evans pitched six innings allowing six hits, two runs and six strikeouts.
“He’s one guy you don’t have to say a whole lot too,” Johnson said. “He took a bump in the first, they had a pitch they knew was coming.”
Although Evans hasn’t shown fans much other than Sunday for starters, Coach Johnson is fully confident in his abilities to go far as a starting pitcher.
“Compete factor, pitch mix, strikes, is unaffected by small things and you run into small things when you start,” Johnson said.
Pitching wasn’t the only star of the show, Derek Curiel, Jake Brown, Michael Braswell III and Luis Hernandez all hit home runs to allow the Tigers the majority of their runs. Curiel was the lead off hitter of the night and set the tone early by hitting a dinger to right field.
Brown hit a three run home run for the Tigers which projected them into the lead against the Volunteers.
Although the Tigers had a strong weekend, they still have more SEC play. They are gearing up to play against Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
