LSU outfielder Derek Curiel was named the SEC Freshman of the Week following an incredible weekend versus No. 5 Tennessee.
Curiel went 7-for-15 at the plate with two doubles, two homers, four runs and seven RBI in four games last week.
His swings were pivotal in LSU’s effort to defeat the Volunteers in the three-game home series. He went 5-for-12 on the weekend and recorded six RBIs in the series.
Heading into Game 2 of the series, Curiel owned a 43 game on-base streak, but he wasn’t able to reach base safely in the 9-3 loss.
Curiel didn’t let that bother him as he came out on Sunday with a vengeance, going 4-for-4 at the plate. He recorded one home run, two doubles and a career-high five RBIs in Game 3 alone.
Curiel also notched another home run in the midweek loss to Northwestern State on Tuesday. He hit the first pitch the Demons threw for a 416-foot home run to right field.
Curiel is now batting a team-high .373 in the lead off spot this season with 15 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 41 RBIs and a .495 on-base percentage.
He hopes to keep his bat hot this weekend as LSU travels to College Station to face Texas A&M in a three-game series starting on Friday.
But first the Tigers square off against Southeastern Louisiana at Alex Box Stadium on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
