LSU Baseball head coach Jay Johnson spoke to the media Wednesday morning as he previews the team’s Texas A&M series starting on Friday.
Johnson spoke highly of the Aggies, stating how with their talented set of pitchers and hitters, they are a team who can go to Omaha. The Aggies (25-19,8-13 SEC) are coming off a rough series against the Texas Longhorns, as they lost all three of their games of the series.
With Texas A&M’s redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Ryan Prager and junior left-handed pitcher Myles Patton likely starting this weekend for the Aggies, Johnson is focused on his team’s confidence as it approaches this series and wants it to focus on its abilities at bat rather than the opponent at hand.
“Confidence gets you through the setbacks,” Johnson said. “It’s more applicable to baseball than any sport because of the nature of it. I’ve never met a great player … or a great team that didn’t really believe in their abilities. It’s (confidence) everything.”
Confidence was everything for LSU this weekend, as they took the series against Tennessee in front of an electrifying home crowd at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers (37-9,14-7 SEC) are now set to face their eighth SEC opponent of the season.
With dominating performances from players Casan Evans, Jared Jones and Michael Braswell III, the Tigers hope to come into College Station with confidence and composure. Despite the last couple of weeks for the Tigers being on and off with at bats, Johnson understands that with a series like this, his team can not afford overcomplicating things throughout each game.
“Play the games,” Johnson said. “Attaching anything to this only complicates situations. They (LSU players) know what we want to do, and they’re motivated to do it.”
“We’ve played our way into a really good position and we’ve done that by focusing on what’s directly in front of us. All we can control is the preparation and effort towards execution, and we’ll do that.”
No. 2 LSU will face Texas A&M in a three-game series on the road starting Friday at 6 p.m. CT at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
