LSU baseball players Dalton Beck and Jacob Mayers spoke to the media Wednesday morning as they preview facing Texas A&M on Friday.
Beck, a utility player who shined when given the opportunity to play against Tennessee, expressed how since transferring into LSU from Incarnate Word, he has developed as a player and had always hoped for a chance to perform at a college baseball program like LSU.
“It’s like what you dream of when you come here,” Beck said. “We have such a great team. I think that’s pretty obvious for anybody to see. Every single person on our team can get it done in any way. Just to get that opportunity was awesome.”
In Game 1 of the Tennessee series, Beck would hit a single into center field, allowing sophomore Jake Brown and junior Ethan Frey to score, helping set up the Tigers for success as freshman Derek Curiel and junior Jared Jones would secure the win 6-3 in walk-off fashion against the Volunteers.
Not only was Beck a key component in the Tigers play against the Volunteers, but also was junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Mayers. Mayers, a transfer from Nicholls State, would help the Tigers close out the game by pitching well on the mound.
As his team faces the end of the regular season with teams like Texas A&M, Mayers expressed how he wants to continue helping his team by improving what he can do best.
“I really just want to keep getting better every day,” Mayers said. That’s the biggest thing for me. I think throwing more strikes, throwing off speed a little bit more and just being more competitive is going to really help me, and just stay in that mental focus of just being able to get anybody out coming into any situation.”
No. 2 LSU will face Texas A&M in a three-game series on the road starting Friday at 6 p.m. CT at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
