The LSU Student Senate appointed new senators and elected its speakers at its first meeting of the fall semester Wednesday.

Ethan Elmer, who was previously speaker pro tempore, was elected speaker after receiving the only nomination. Tyhlar Holliway and Konnor Crowder both received nominations for speaker pro tempore, but in a vote of 49-7 with 3 abstentions, Holliway won the position.

Crowder and Holliway pled their case as to why they felt they could improve the Senate and thrive in the position. Multiple senators asked how each would manage their position in the Senate among other responsibilities. Both made it known that they considered the Student Senate a top priority and have both arranged their schedules to comply with senate meetings. Ultimately, Holliway was voted in.

“It’s about doing the hard work, not just claiming the credit, and it’s about leaving this place better than we found it,” Holliway said.

Both Elmer and Holliway expressed gratitude for their elections and were sworn into their positions.

Alongside the speaker and speaker pro tempore elections, student body President Lavar Henderson and Vice President Abry Layrisson were sworn into their positions by the new Chief Justice Austin Arceneaux and Deputy Chief Justice Ella Millet.

The Senate also introduced the newly-elected senators from last semester. They were sworn in and were officially made members of the Student Senate. There were around 30 newly appointed senators.

Henderson and Layrisson made a closing statement to wish the new elected members luck and let the Senate know they support them in their work.

The next Student Senate meeting will take place Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Capital Chambers in the Student Union.
