September is National Suicide Prevention Month, with Sept. 10 being recognized as National Suicide Prevention Day. This is to help shed awareness and encourage people to have conversations regarding mental health.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death amongst college students nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
At Louisiana State University, students can reach out to the Student Health Center and Mental Health Service Center by calling or texting 225-924-5781. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline is also available by call or text at 988. Both numbers run the hotline for 24 hours a day.
The message this month is that help is always available and reaching out can save lives.
