Week 5 of college football presents an elite matchup between two top-ranked teams to gain control of the SEC.
No. 4 LSU travels to Oxford this Saturday to face No. 13 Ole Miss in an extremely charged environment, fueled by the intense rivalry between the two. To prepare for a game like this, it’s important for a program to have an experienced head coach who is ready to lead a team into battle and doesn’t crumble under the pressure of a season-defining game.
LSU head coach Brian Kelly enters this game ranked higher and ready to defend the team’s undefeated record, while Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin looks to get revenge for last year’s defeat. Both programs are lucky to have highly respected coaches who will ensure their teams are prepared to win.
Kelly and Kiffin joined the SEC only a year apart, having previously achieved success with other highly regarded programs. Now both teams see themselves in a very similar situation: trying to gain control of the SEC.
No matter who wins, it will be a massive statement for either head coach. Which one gives their team the edge, though?
Both coaches have solid all-time records, and although neither has experienced playoff success since joining the SEC, their tenures are full of achievements.
The two have similar statistics, with Kelly boasting an SEC record of 33-11 and a 75% win percentage, while Kiffin’s longer tenure has resulted in a 48-18 record and a 73% win percentage.
Though when matched up against ranked opponents, Kelly wins this matchup all-time with a record of 37-37. While in charge of LSU, he obtained a 6-8 ranked record.
In the SEC, Kiffin flips the script with a rough 11-24 all-time record against ranked opponents, but makes up for it with an 8-8 record while at Ole Miss.
Kelly offers more experience in season-defining games, thanks to his history at Notre Dame, and now, after three years with LSU, is getting comfortable competing with the powerhouses of the SEC.
For the Rebels, Kiffin offers more experience in SEC matchups and has had great success at home.
One key factor of this game is home-field advantage. Ole Miss prides itself on having one of the toughest SEC atmospheres, and since 2021, the Rebels have a record of 27-3 in Oxford.
Kelly doesn’t have the best reputation on the road. He and LSU are currently 7-6 on the road, but the past two years have been worse, with 2-3 and 2-2 road records. With the reputation of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, it will definitely be a struggle to go into Oxford and come out with the win.
Yet, if there’s a team to come out victorious this year, it could be the Tigers, judging by previous matchups between Kelly and Kiffin.
Kelly is 2-1 against Kiffin during their time in the SEC. In both wins, LSU was the underdog.
These wins came over 11th and seventh-ranked Ole Miss teams, making both victories major statements for Kelly.
Even looking farther back, when Kelly and Kiffin were heated rivals at Notre Dame and USC, Kelly was victorious two of the three times they met. Weirdly, Kelly has always had a leg up on Kiffin, even as they jump around conferences.
Like in the past, Kelly enters this game as the underdog, even though LSU is the higher-ranked team.
This is really a testament to how well the Ole Miss offense has performed over the past two weeks, along with its exceptional home record. Kelly will have to exceed expectations and try to pull off an upset on Kiffin, but if the past few matchups have shown anything, it’s that the Tigers are capable of besting the Rebels.
Kelly will have to counter Kiffin’s fast-paced offense with the top-tier defense he’s established alongside defensive coordinator Blake Baker. There seems to be no better defense to do this than LSU’s, and with Ole Miss still having quarterback confusion, there are many ways for LSU to capitalize.
Ole Miss’s offense is set up to outshoot any team, so if LSU lets things get out of hand, the Rebels might find themselves with a commanding lead as the game goes by.
There’s no doubt that this game will be a fierce rivalry game with offensive fireworks, and whoever plays to their strengths best should come out on top. Both of these coaches have a rich history and have set this game up as a crucial building block in their respective seasons.
