LSU law students are used to being greeted by a set of escalators upon their arrival at the Law Library, but next semester, the library’s entrance will look a whole lot different. After years of running, LSU decides to tear down the escalators and replace them with stairs. On Wednesday, March 25, the Law Center hosted a “One Last Ride” event to commemorate the years that the escalator has been serving students and to bring the era to a close.
This event allows students to take one last ride on the escalator before its annihilation. They provided snacks, drinks, and music in celebration of the end. After speaking to numerous students, the decision stems from ongoing technical issues affecting the daily functioning of the escalators.
The escalators are proven to be loud, often disturbing students who try to study in the library. When I asked students how they feel about the demolition, they said that the escalators “are broken about 60% of the time, but [they] would take that chance if it means not taking stairs.”
It is unclear when the stairs will be open for use but the project is set to start early next semester.
