The LSU Student Senate met Wednesday passing a bill that would prohibit Student Government tickets from receiving “financial or in-kind” support from politically affiliated organizations.
This bill, SGB 22, was presented by Sen. Ducote, Sen. Jack Appleton, Sen. Benjamin Goldstein and Sen. James Williams III.
They urged that the goal behind this was to keep student elections focused on students. However, with this bill it does not limit students or recognized student organizations from interacting with the tickets.
As per the Rules committee meeting minutes “I think it’s unfair that these entities are coming in and supporting candidates with the intent to push an agenda. This body should be for students and by students and I think we have a good outline,” Ducote said.
Ducote said the bill is entirely apolitical but it is unfortunate that the only reference is from one party. However, the minutes do not state what organization they are referring to. The body seemed receptive to this bill and ultimately this was passed 49-1-4.
SGB 16 was presented by Sen. Joshua Jones and Sen. Ducote and this bill is in regards to the delay of the civics commission applications being sent out this past year. This bill would amend the SG code to state that the commission must put out the application within the 30th class day. This passed 51-1-2.
Sen. Ducote, Sen. Crowder and Sen. Trenton Craven presented SGB 18. This bill was passed 53-0-2 and will be a code change.
The code change will make impeachment fairer by taking away the Senate’s power to both investigate and decide guilt. With the change, Senate will only start the process of impeachment.
Sen. Julien Templet presented SGB 20 and this was passed with a vote of 53-0-2 to allocate $2,200 to host four Kona Ice trucks on campus. There will be a truck in the Quad and at the Business Education Complex. This will take place later this month and is open to students.
A bill to appropriate $4,999 to repaint the Executive Branch Office Suite was presented by Sen. Williams III. This bill, SGB 20, was passed with a vote of 54-0-1.
The Student Senate also heard 23 pieces of legislation in the “new business” portion of the meeting. All were presented and will be voted on in committee meetings next week. Some pieces of legislation include adjusting the SG code and appropriating funds to specific events and organizations.
If passed this legislation will be voted on at the next meeting. The LSU Student Senate meets weekly at 6:30 in The Union Capital Chambers and is open to the public.
