The LSU Tigers saw their SEC Tournament run come to an end on Saturday, falling to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the semifinals in a tightly contested matchup that slipped away late.
LSU entered the semifinal with momentum after a strong quarterfinal performance against Oklahoma, which showcased the grit to come back from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 4-3 victory.
The same story felt like it could come true today when Mississippi State quickly seized control by claiming the doubles point.
The Bulldogs secured victories on two courts, but as the singles matches were approaching, some unexpected inclement weather brought a three-hour weather delay. There was hope that this was going to be the spark to grab those needed singles points to move on to the championship finals.
“It was a tough, but really good match today,” said head coach Danny Bryan. “You could see the momentum shifting back and forth multiple times with both teams battling hard.”
With this early advantage from the Bulldogs, the pressure was on for the Tigers heading into the resumed singles play. Despite the deficit, LSU responded with a competitive effort across the lineup. Pushing multiple matches deep into third sets.
In singles, the Tigers fought to even the score, earning an early point from the middle of the lineup. With top players like Alessio Vasquez and Matias Ponce de Leon coming up short in the first game, the firepower that once flooded the LSU crew began fading away in the Texas heat.
The Tigers leveled at 1-1, when freshman standout Erik Arutiunian took a win on court two, giving the chance to take control with a poised look. However, Mississippi State answered with wins on top courts, taking down Olaf Pieczkowski in a three-set battle.
The common pattern of the afternoon was having the fight and means to win, but just falling short of the mark to bring home another staged comeback. Regaining the advantage and forcing LSU into a must-win situation across the remaining matches.
The semifinal turned on a pair of tightly contested third sets. LSU battled back from early breaks in both, but the Bulldogs’ consistency proved decisive. Mississippi State secured the clinching point after a hard-fought match that featured long rallies and multiple momentum shifts.
The win sealed the team’s victory and ended LSU’s hopes of reaching the conference championship.
Despite the loss, LSU demonstrated resilience throughout the contest. Several Tigers are overcoming slow starts, but this semifinal appearance marked a strong showing in conference play and highlighted the team’s growth heading into postseason competition.
With the SEC Tournament concluded for the Tigers, LSU now shifts its focus to NCAA postseason play. The Tigers will await a postseason assignment, aiming to build off the SEC Tournament run and carry that momentum into the national tournament.
While the defeat to Mississippi State stings, LSU’s effort and competitive depth signal a team capable of making noise in the weeks ahead.
