A Louisiana high school senior, Martha Odom, 17, was killed in the crossfire after two groups began shooting at each other following a confrontation at the mall Thursday, authorities said.
Odom was set to graduate and attend Sewanee, known as the University of the South, this fall.
Five others were also wounded in the mass shooting.
Odom served as the editor-in-chief at her high school newspaper, The Authored Ascension, at Ascension Episcopal School. She also received multiple short fiction awards three years in a row in the Writes of Spring Regional Writing Contest.
Markel Lee, 17, has been arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder charges in connection to the shooting, authorities said in a press conference Friday. Baton Rouge police said one person is still wanted for questioning.
Correction: The Reveille previously incorrectly reported Odom intended to go to LSU. This was based on information from the Manship School of Mass Communication. The Reveille regrets this error.
