LSU Softball is heading to its 11th program Super Regional beginning on Friday where they will face No. 1 seeded Alabama.
Head Coach Beth Torina spoke with the media after Tuesday’s practice about what this year’s group is doing right, and how they will need to stay hot against the Tide.
Alabama is known for its intimidating softball environment. Torina spoke on this and expectation heading to Tuscaloosa.
“They do a great job there. They have an incredible fanbase and they pack the park. It’s a tough place to play,” Torina said. However, Torina says her Tigers are used to hostile environments and are ready to rise to the challenge.
“We’ve been in environments where we have seen a lot of big crowds and a lot of great teams. I think our team won’t be thrown by that.”
The Tiger’s key to their dominant regional performance was on the mound. Starting pitchers Jayden Heavener, Cece Celuura, and Paytn Monticelli all pitched complete games, only allowing two runs over the entire weekend.
“To get three complete games out of three pitchers and regional is almost completely unheard of,” Torina said. “It’s pretty special what they did this past weekend.”
When asked about the challenge of facing the No. 1 team in the tournament, Torina pointed to the adversity they have already overcome as a sign that the Tigers can handle it all.
“I think this team is tough. I think they understand that they can take a punch and it doesn’t have to be perfect,” Torina said.
“I think they have a great track record with tough pitching, tough opponents… they’ll be ready.”
No.16 LSU will look to make their first appearance at the Women’s College World Series since 2017 this year, but they’ll have to get through Alabama first.
Game one of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional will take place at 7 PM on Friday on ESPN2.
