Wednesday marked the official first day of spring, and campus has already begun to transition to warmer days.
The Quad is busier than it has been in months. Students pick a prime piece of real estate and set up camp in the grass, lounging, studying and napping, but most importantly, basking in the sun’s rays.
Elementary education sophomore Dylan Wilson said she has seen many people enjoying the outdoors recently, herself included. Wilson also noticed some students taking relaxation to another level.
Hammocks are everywhere, she said.
Biology sophomore Will Thompson agreed hammocks are now prevalent on campus.
“[I’ve seen] a lot more hammocking this year, people are all over the place,” he said while lying in his own hammock between classes.
Photography sophomore Nick Martino said he loves his hammock. “It is so calming and relaxing after a bad test or finals week,” he said.
Martino said one of the best parts about owning a hammock is the convenience of being able to set up quickly between classes and between any two trees.
With the warm weather comes a more beautiful campus. Birds are chirping in the foliage of the stately oaks and the azaleas are blooming.
Biology freshman Hannan Jichi said campus is a lot prettier with happier people getting more involved in the campus activities. Jichi said she is happier to go to class when the weather is prettier.
Free Speech Plaza is also buzzing with activity: more evangelicals are out, on Tuesday students debated with some Christian evangelicals, and on Wednesday a table was set up where students could “ask a Mormon”.
Students are also showing a little skin in the warm weather.
Martino said he has seen more people in shorts and tank tops and even some in bathing suits tanning in the Quad.
“I see people more on bikes and long boards. Less of them are walking,” he said. “This is the best weather ever. You can’t have a bad day because it is beautiful outside.”
History junior Connor Roberts said his favorite part of spring is “the sun actually coming out and hitting the skin.”
High school students are taking time to tour the campus in the warm weather.
Psychology freshman Laura Pousson said she has seen an increasing number of tours on campus and has even learned a few things by eavesdropping while walking by.
Pousson said during the spring, students are able to see the end of the tunnel — summer is almost here.
“This is the best weather eve. You can’t have a bad day because it is beautiful outside.”
