Many of the big names on the LSU track and field team will not compete at the Louisiana Classics at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.
The athletes who competed at last weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championship meet will get the weekend off and compete at the LSU Relays next weekend. LSU coach Dennis Shaver said anybody who didn’t compete at the NCAA meet will compete this weekend, including athletes who aren’t on LSU’s traveling squad.
Shaver said because of the long indoor season and the stresses that come with competing in the NCAA meet, he will rest the top athletes. He also said the next couple of weeks will be low-key, and the competition picks up in two weeks for the Texas Relays.
Athletes who throw discus, hammer or javelin will see their first competition of the track and field season with the start of the outdoor meets.
“All of those athletes that have been anxiously waiting for indoor to finish so they could go. They’ll all be participating,” Shaver said. “It’s a limited number of things that we’re going to do.”
