Daedalus, otherwise known as Alfred Darlington, is a complete virtuoso with 128 keys. If you’re unfamiliar with the Monome, it’s an interface between fingertips and the computer – it is in essence a keyboard and allows an artist to control sequenced music like a piano. Daeadlus was one of the first to use it as a musical instrument and innovate with programing special applications to control him live music performances with the Monome, and just like turntablism, it is something that you have to seen and experience to believe.
His style and genre encompasses and passes through quite a few different names, but portmanteau of electronic and jam band should have to be crafted especially for what this man does. He has the ability to play the music live, become inspired by what he sees, and jam out with the crowd. That is was a live performance is about, and for those who have never experienced an electronic musician capitalize on that energy, Daedalus is someone you will not want to miss out on.
I was able to see him perform at Voodoo last year, and the one thing that struck me outside of his skill with the instrument was his humbleness. He has a unique stage presence, being called a “vicotrian gentlemen” with his suade suit, but he is incredibly humble and thankful for the performance. He truly does enjoy the entire production and performance, perhaps more than anyone in the crowd does, and that was easily the highlight of the show. Knowing that the performer is enjoying themselves and having a good time is a vibe easily transferred to the audience, and I took a lot away from that.
If you’re looking for an alternative electronic experience that you won’t find with a DJ or producer, Daedalus will offer you just a bit of everything all played and curated with a delicate crafting of key presses.
