This year hip-hop discovered a new metaphorical madman known as Captain Murphy, as he emerged from the brain of Flying Lotus. Steve Ellison a.k.a Flying Lotus is the multi-faceted Los Angeles producer, musician and recently recognized rapper.
Ellison had a remarkable year in 2012 with the release of his highly acclaimed fourth studio album “Until the Quiet Comes” and releasing “Duality” under the title of self proclaimed villain Captain Murphy. But Flying Lotus has been a recognizable force in music for more than half a decade. The Low End Theory native has worked with acts such as Thom Yorke, Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington, and Odd Future affiliate and BUKU artist Earl Sweatshirt. Ellison is also founder of his label Brainfeeder that supports acts such as Thundercat, Tokimonsta and Daedelus.
Following the release of his album “Until the Quiet Comes”, Flying Lotus has adopted a three layer live production. A single projection is placed in front, while Ellison performs behind that and another projection is behind the artist. Both projections are a live improvisation by two visual artists simultaneously creating an illusion that supports the music of Flying Lotus. Watch the Youtube link to get a visual representation.
What to expect: This will be a visual treat. Flying Lotus has an arsenal of music ready to be used and with the three-layer production it is sure to blow some minds. Expect to hear some Captain Murhpy tracks as Ellison grabs the mic and transforms into the villainous Captain Murphy. Also a potential live collaboration between Murphy and Earl Sweatshirt is a possibility.
