An estimated 23,000 fans gathered in Tiger Stadium on Saturday to watch LSU’s annual Spring Game in which the White team, comprised primarily of projected starters for next season, dominated the Purple team 37-0.
Fans anxious to see what new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron’s play calling looks like will have to wait longer than expected, as the quarterbacks called their own plays in the scrimmage.
Despite a shaky start, senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger finished the game completing 12 of his 19 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns.
“It was tough out there,” Mettenberger said. “Coach Cameron allowed us to call our own plays and it was the first time I’ve ever done that. It was kind of a slow start to get going, but we turned it around and had a pretty good day.”
Early enrollee freshman quarterback Anthony Jennings started under center for the purple team.
The dual-threat quarterback threw 8-for-21 for 98 yards and added anouther 26 yards on the ground.
The Tigers’ defensive line did what they could to silence any critics that say it will struggle next season.
Junior defensive lineman Danielle Hunter gave the Purple squad’s offensive line fits, finishing the game with eight tackles and two sacks.
Junior defensive tackles Ego Ferguson and Anthony Johnson also proved to be a force on the inside, combining for 12 tackles.
“A lot of people said that we couldn’t do it and that we were a lot thinner of a defensive line since we lost a few people,” Ferguson said. “… I feel like [Anthony Johnson and I] are going to be the best duo in the country this year. I feel like if we keep pushing each other, then the sky is the limit for us.”
