It’s been midterm week for everyone, so I’ll keep this post short.
1. Sony blows everyone away with full-frame mirrorless cameras
If there’s one thing in the camera world Sony has an iron grasp on, it’s the mirrorless market.
The NEX line is possibly the most critically acclaimed mirrorless camera available today, and Sony one-upped itself with Tuesday’s announcement of the Alpha 7 and 7R.
The two devices are the “world’s smallest full-frame interchangeable lens modes,” according to Sony.
For those unfamiliar with photography, “full-frame” refers to the size of the camera’s image sensor — the most important contributor to image quality in a digital camera. (That’s right, megapixels don’t mean anything past 12)
The larger the sensor, the better the photo. The 7 and 7R have 24- and 36-megapixel, full-size, 35mm sensors respectively, theoretically giving photos a quality close to that of film.
Each also has a Sony Bionz X image processor, can shoot at 5 frames per second and can capture 60-or 24-frames-per-second, 1080p video.
A gorgeous tilting LCD display takes up most of the back of the devices, as well as a 2.4-million dot OLED digital viewfinder.
Unfortunately, the high-end devices come with that kind of price tag — the Alpha 7 is $1,999 with a kit lens, and the 7R is $2,299.99.
Another downside is the number of lenses available for full-frame Sony cameras, which is less than desirable.
Nikon and Canon reign supreme in the world of professional cameras, but if Sony keeps releasing ridiculous products like this, that could change.
Here’s Sony’s ad for the cameras, complete with an epic orchestra playing in the background:
2. Apple’s next event is Oct. 22.
As usual, AllThingsD’s prediction was correct, as Apple sent out it’s press conference invitations Tuesday.
The tagline “we still have a lot to cover” is appropriate for the Oct. 22 event, considering news about iPads, OS X Mavericks and new Macbook Pros were completely absent from Apple’s iPhone 5S/5C conference.
Expect it to be a news-heavy conference, with a full recap from me afterward.
