LSU maintained its spot at the top of the Southeastern Conference with a 1-0 victory against Missouri the LSU Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
“I don’t think we can have more confidence right now, but there’s still a lot of work to be done,” said senior goalkeeper Megan Kinneman. “We’re going to enjoy this win and the couple days off, but we’ll be back at work next week.”
With the exception of a few LSU (9-3-2, 5-0-1 SEC) counterattacks, Missouri (6-7-1, 2-3-1 SEC) held possession for the majority of first half. Missouri fired nine shots and made several dangerous attacks into the box, but Kinneman saved all three shots on goal.
LSU struggled to get its offense moving, as it only managed to get off five shots – none on goal – in the first half.
But LSU opened up the second half with a flurry of shots on goal, and sophomore midfielder Heather Magee knocked in her second goal of the season on an assist from freshman striker Summer Clarke. Clarke swung the ball to Magee from left of the box, and Magee fired a straight shot that found the top-left corner of the net.
“I knew Summer was going to get in the box, so I got in line,” Magee said. “I was just kind of waiting back, watching the play and supporting the ball. I just saw it pop out, and I tried to be as calm and composed as possible and just passed it in.”
LSU controlled possession for the start of the second half, but Missouri consistently attacked the LSU back line in the final 15 minutes. Kinneman continued her unflinching dominance between the posts, and she finished with four saves in her sixth shutout of 2013.
“We got that goal early, and I knew we had to hold on to it,” Kinneman said. “I think we played pretty well overall defensively, and I knew I was going to have to make a couple of saves. I just had to stay mentally queued in.”
Every SEC team has Sunday off this week, and LSU will return to action in one week when it hosts Ole Miss at the LSU Soccer Stadium.
