Student Government passed a resolution Wednesday evening supporting a Faculty Senate resolution that would urge the Office of the University Registrar to schedule fall breaks prior to Oct. 31 in the future.
Many University students were disappointed that fall break fell two weeks after midterms and two weeks before Thanksgiving break this year. Some SG senators were in agreement that fall break falling two weeks before Thanksgiving break seemed to be counterintuitive.
“It just does not make any sense to have fall break then Thanksgiving break,” Senator Jackson Voss said.
Typically fall break is scheduled the week after midterms and occurs on a weekend when there is an away game. As a result of the University starting the fall semester a week later than usual, everything on the academic calendar was pushed back one week. This includes fall break, which was pushed back to accommodate the next away game — Alabama.
Fall break was instituted almost a decade ago to alleviate stress on students, especially freshman, said Senator Jacob Boudreaux.
The resoultion will be presented to Faculty Senate who will then present the resolutions to the University Registrar.
In addition to passing resolutions, SG amendments to the constitution will take effect immediately as the student body voted favorably for several amendments in the fall election, held Monday and Tuesday.
In the executive branch, the president and vice president’s term limits have been extended to a maximum of two one-year terms, and the president must appoint an executive staff as well as appoint judicial officers to the University Court.
In the past, University Court officers were elected by the student body and faced re-election every year. The amendment was proposed to prevent bias in University Court, said SG Director of Communications David Holley. The president can appoint five of nine officers per administration.
The amendments also remove College Council officers if the Council has been inactive for at least four weeks as a way to prevent dormancy in SG, Holley said.
There will be a runoff election to vote for sentors on Nov. 4 and 5. The results will be announced on Nov. 6 at 4:30 p.m. in the Live Oak Lounge in the Student Union.
But things weren’t all business Wednesday. SG showed its Halloween spirit by dressing in costumes for the senate meeting. The Incredible Hulk, Minne Mouse and Superman were some characters in attendance.
