Students will gather tonight together to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. in a showcase featuring poetry, dance and more.
MLK Performing Arts Night is at 6 p.m. tonight in the LSU Union Theatre and is free and open to the public. The program will feature LSU students performing in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and achievements.
A few surprises are also in store, according to Chenice Samuel, business management sophomore. Chenice is one of the many team leaders overseeing the annual MLK Commemorative Celebration.
This event is just one part of the week-long MLK Commemorative Celebration Committee’s annual celebration. Every year, the many students who make up the committee come together and plan the celebration to honor the late civil rights leader.
This coming April will mark the 45th anniversary of King’s death.
“It’s important to celebrate Dr. King’s life because he lived, fought, and died so that we can all live in a truly diverse society,” Samuel said.
Bianca Clements, kinesiology Junior and team leader, said she joined the committee because civil rights leaders of the past did their part and she wants to honor those achievements.
