Former Tiger ace of staff Kevin Gausman is garnering national attention once again.
MLB.com writer and prospect expert Jonathan Mayo released his annual Top-100 MLB Prospects list for the 2013 season on Tuesday, and he ranked Gausman as the No. 37 player to watch.
Gausman, currently a member of the Baltimore Orioles’ minor league system, pitched for two seasons under LSU coach Paul Mainieri in Alex Box Stadium.
After starting 14 games as a freshman in 2011, Gausman assumed the ace role in a relatively young starting rotation during his sophomore season, leading the Southeastern Conference with 12 victories while posting a 2.77 ERA.
Gausman helped lead the Tigers to an NCAA Super Regional matchup against Stony Brook last season, as he helped close out a Game 1 victory against the Seawolves with a relief appearance in the 12th inning.
The stud pitcher attracted the interest of a number of MLB organizations following LSU’s elimination in the Super Regional. His 6-foot-4 frame and high-velocity fastball made him a highly-rated prospect prior to the 2012 Draft, and the Baltimore Orioles selected him with the fourth overall pick.
In a short stint in the minors after his selection, Gausman started five games, recording a 3.60 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched.
