The Daily Reveille launched a new website last semester, and we’re grateful that we did because it gave us the ability to break more stories and to better serve you, the students of LSU.
We used our website well when news picked up in the fall, ranging from Hurricane Isaac’s landfall to the bomb threat called into the University to multiple students being hit by cars on campus. We also developed three new, interactive databases — one showing the progression of football players’ sizes over the past several decades, one listing drink specials in Baton Rouge nightly and one compiling student discounts at local businesses.
The time has come, though, for us to take advantage of what we can bring you via the Web on a daily basis. In one word, here’s what you can expect to see this semester: more.
More interactive online features, more videos, more blogs, more live chats with our reporters and columnists, more databases, more updates and changes throughout the day — we will bring all of it to you.
The Daily Reveille’s salary database listing how much LSU pays each University employee has been a longtime favorite among our readers. The old version on our former website platform was a simple Excel spreadsheet that readers could scroll through.
We’re completely revamping the salary database this semester, and we are turning it into a fascinating interactive database that I believe students and faculty members will truly enjoy. When the final product is complete, we will ensure that it’s promoted in our print edition and easy to find online.
The Daily Reveille’s social media presence has been increasing throughout the past several semesters, and the best way to get quick updates about breaking news on campus and throughout the LSU area during the day and at night is to follow us on Twitter @lsureveille and like our Facebook page. We also have Twitter accounts specifically devoted to news, sports and entertainment — @TDR_news, @TDR_sports and @TDR_entertain.
Interested in following a particular sport? Each of our sports writers keeps his or her own Twitter account that you can follow for live updates of games and events.
Despite our paradigm shift toward digital first, our print product will still be the award-winning, beautiful newspaper that it has always been. We realize students and faculty love the convenience of picking up a copy of The Reveille on the way to class each day, and our print product will not disappoint.
We’ve also invested in stepping up our game in the areas of investigative and enterprise reporting, so expect to see more in-depth reports about the University. They will, of course, be accompanied by great online-exclusive content.
During this time of changes in the media industry, it’s vital that we remember the audience we serve — the LSU students and the campus community. Every change we make is to ensure we are bringing you the best news coverage possible, with as many ways to consume it as you would like.
Please send us your input whenever you have any. We want to know what you want to see in the paper and on The Reveille’s website, so send us your database ideas, your news tips, your own photo submissions. You, as students, are our primary stakeholders. Email me any time at [email protected].
We’re looking forward to a great semester!
