For better or for worse, the NBA team based in the Crescent City will now be known as the New Orleans Pelicans.
The team has been called the Hornets since moving from Charlotte in 2002, but the old mascot offered no representation of New Orleans or Louisiana culture.
While the Pelicans probably won’t exactly strike fear into the hearts of most men, the bird is on the state flag, so it has a tie to Louisiana.
