Last year, Angela Costanza and Chastity Brewer became the first gay couple to legally adopt a child in Louisiana, but their case has met with significant opposition in the courts.
The state has drawn out adoption proceeding in every way it can, refusing to recognize the couple’s marriage. They were married in California and live in Lafayette, Louisiana and they raised a son, Nicholas.
“Nicholas has two mothers. That’s that’s never happened before in this state,” said Paul Baier, LSU Law Professor and attorney for the case. “It’s a very dramatic judicial pronouncement that is now on appeal because the attorney general’s challenged that adoption order.”
The LGBT community has been making large pushes all around the country, though they face stiff opposition within Louisiana, leaving their future uncertain.
