LSU student government candidates running for the executive position all belong to a sorority or fraternity.
Do you have to be Greek to win a student government election? Current Student Government Vice President Taylor Parks says no.
Although Parks is not part of the Greek system, her running mate, John Woodard, is a fraternity member. Parks met Woodard met during Stripes Orientation in 2013.
Parks says that Greeks’ involvement in student government “depends on the year,” and believes that political involvement in 2014 has been “split” between non-Greek and Greek members.
Freshman Warren Travers, however, says that you may not have to be Greek, but you certainly have to run on a ticket. In Fall 2013, Travers ran as an independent because he didn’t know many individuals in student government. He believes this decision caused his loss, because he didn’t have the “manpower” of a ticket.
According to Travers, running for student government is all about “who you know,” and it if you don’t know the right people, you’re out.
