Famed Baton Rouge rapper Torrence Hatch, more commonly known as Lil Boosie, gave his first press conference since his release from jail last Wednesday. The event called “Boosie Speaks” was the first opportunity the public had to hear from the artist himself. Atlantic Records held the press event for the media and streamed the event live on the internet, a social media phenomenon Boosie himself says he’s unfamiliar with after his five year imprisonment.
“I haven’t tweeted yet,” explains Boosie. “I’ll probably tweet… saying thanks to the fans.”
On September 23, 2009, Boosie was sentenced to two years in prison for third-degree drug possession charges. After additional charges for smuggling drugs into prison and battling a harrowing first-degree murder charge, Lil Boosie was released on March 5, 2014, nearly five years later.
The news of his release had the internet buzzing as hashtags like #BoosieFree trended on Twitter. Webster Gradney, Jr., more commonly known as Webbie, was one of the first of many artists to express his jubilation at the event.
“I told Boo that God has a plan,” Webbie explained. “He got my brother free; God brought him home.”
Rappers Bun B and Jeezy also showed up to support Boosie. Jeezy stated that he was glad Boosie was home while Bun B thanked fans for their continued support.
Finally, after years of anticipation from fans and detractors alike, Lil Boosie walked onto stage to loud applause. He was asked questions by the Breakfast Club’s Angela Yee ranging from social media, future plans, and even new music.
“I have written 1,018 songs,” said Boosie.
Boosie told the audience that he kept abreast of new artists and music through magazines. However, he never listened to any other artist and instead preferred to work on his own music.
Boosie says he is in talks to renegotiate his contract with Trill Entertainment and is currently in the studio to record his next album. The rapper is also ready to return to the stage.
“I havent been able to perform songs from Superbad or Incarerated,” said Boosie. “I’m ready to go on tour.”
Follow @BoosieOfficial for information on tour dates which should posted later this week.
