The LSU track and field teams will participate in the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays beginning today in Austin, Texas.
The meet is the second outdoor event for the Tigers and Lady Tigers this year. Only distance runners and throwers competed in last week’s Jim Mize Invitational, so many eager athletes will be competing for the first time since the indoor season.
Despite earning two All-American honors during the NCAA Indoor Championships, junior sprinter Vernon Norwood said he can’t wait to finally run outside.
“I’m just excited indoor is finished,” Norwood said. “Track is naturally an outdoor sport, and I could not be more excited.”
Coach Dennis Shaver is also anticipating the beginning of the outdoor contests and enjoys the nice weather accompanying the change of season, too.
“I think after the indoor season the athletes concluded that they were really anxious to get outside,” Shaver said.
LSU is hoping to build off a productive indoor season; the men’s 4×400-meter relay team won the national championship, and both men and women teams earned three combined All-American honors.
“Outdoors is a new challenge, and we always keep in mind the NCAA championships,” Shaver said. “I certainly think that we have a team to contend with outdoors, as long as we manage to stay healthy.”
The event will be held at Mike A. Meyers Stadium, beginning today with the female heptathlon and concluding Sunday afternoon with the male 4×400 meter relay.
