One of LSU coach D-D Breaux’s goals this season was for her squad to receive the national recognition she felt they deserved. The nation took notice, and after 37 years of coaching, Breaux was rewarded for her efforts.
After guiding the LSU gymnastics squad to the highest finish in school history, Breaux was named National Coach of the Year, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women announced Monday.
Assistant coaches Jay Clark and Bob Moore were also awarded with National Assistant Coaches of the Year honors. It was the first for Moore and second for Clark.
The awards were determined by the votes from all head coaches of Division 1 women’s collegiate gymnastics teams.
Breaux’s first National Coach of the Year Award comes on the heels of directing the Tigers to a third-place finish in the NCAA Super Six Finals, which is the highest finish in program history.
Under Breaux’s direction, LSU set numerous records during the 2014 season. The Tigers broke the school record for highest team score in program history on three separate occasions this season, including a 198.325 in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional that tied as the highest output in the nation this season.
The squad also set a school record by registering at least a 197 in 13 consecutive meets, breaking the previous mark of eight in 2004.
The Tigers reached the No. 1 national ranking for the first time since 2005, which they held for three consecutive weeks.
