Cherry Glazerr released their debut album Haxel Princess back in January, but I didn’t give it the time it deserved until a few weeks ago. Looking back, it feels like fate that I bought the album just two weeks before my 20th birthday. I was so excited to break into my twenties that I forgot what it felt like to be a teenage girl. Thankfully, their track “Teenage Girl” became my personal elegy for my last teenage days complete with lyrics of milkshakes and cat eyes or sneaking cigarettes at lunchtime. The novel pop song captures teenage boredom perfectly beneath hazy guitar riffs and jingle bells.
Cherry Glazerr are as young as they sound. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Clementine Creevy is just 17 and met drummer Hanna Uribe, 16, in high school. They completed the trio with bassist Sean Redman, 22, who is the only one who can buy a beer.
At first listen, the minimal pop songs sound simple with innocent lyrics sung over spooky grooves, but the album has so much more. The opening track “Cry Baby” gives you something to dance to and, before you know it, you’ll be humming the lyrics for hours. Cherry Glazerr even has the ode to the cheesy golden glory you’ve been looking for your entire life in their song “Grilled Cheese.”
Their sound is youthful, but nowhere close to naïve. The fashion label Saint Laurent chose their song “Trick or Treat Dance Floor” for their dance wear video clip, and the band has been preforming with acts like Redd Kross and Mikal Cronin at the El Rey.
The young band has more than just catchy pop songs. Songs like “Haxel Princess” or “Whites Not My Color This Evening” has a more crunchy metal-punk sound with the prefect teenage melodrama pop I love so much. “Whites Not My Color This Evening” is one of my favorites off the album because it captures the teen angst Cherry Glazerr is all about with Clementine screeching in frustration.
I thank Clementine Creevy from the bottom of my heart for reminding me what’s great about those teenage years. I feel lucky that I got to spend the last of mine celebrating my reckless endeavors with a soundtrack like Haxel Princess.
