Mickey Blocks
LSU freshman forward Jordan Mickey continued his run at the history books on Wednesday night, posting five blocks in the Tigers’ 68-49 win against Texas A&M.
It was the most blocks for Mickey since the beginning of the month when he posted six in LSU’s win against Arkansas, and tied for his fourth most in a single game this season.
“I was able to give my team some good defensive blocks and take away some shots from [Texas A&M],” Mickey said. “I’m just here to help my team any way I can.”
The five stuffs brings Mickey’s single-season total to 92 on the year, just three shy of surpassing former Tigers Stromile Swift (1999-00) and Chris Johnson (2008-09) for No. 5 on LSU’s leaderboards.
At slightly more than 3.5 blocks per game, Mickey is on pace to record 102 for the season, leaving him at No. 4 all time behind all three of former All-American Shaquille O’Neal’s totals.
“I’m not looking at how many blocks I have,” Mickey said. “I’m just trying to play the game and if it comes, it comes.”
Stone cold Jones
The last time the Aggies and the Tigers met, Texas A&M junior guard Jamal Jones contributed five 3-pointers to the Aggies’ thrashing of LSU’s perimeter defense, but this time around, Jones found the net just twice from the field.
Jones recorded seven points against the Tigers on Wednesday night compared to the 19 he produced the first time around. As a team, Texas A&M fell from 10 buckets from beyond the arc to just four in the most recent contest.
“Defensively, I thought we did a great job on Jones,” LSU coach Johnny Jones said. “He didn’t score a field goal in the second half and I thought that was a telltale sign for us.”
Jones finished the night with 20 percent from the field while Texas A&M shot a dismal 16-52 as a team.
