There is no denying the culture of Louisiana and the many traditions rooted in music and life that come together to form it. My new love for this culture has manifested a great desire to seek out local bands in an effort to learn more about great Zydeco-influenced music.
The Revelers, from Lafayette, Louisiana, come up just in time for the Mardi Gras season. The Revelers is a 6-piece band creating strong sounds with the accordion and fiddles in rhythm with the bluesy guitars and bass. With a combination of band members from all over the South, The Revelers embrace that strong traditions of music and create their unique lively sound. With songs strongly rooted in classical zydeco, De Fois and J’avais L’habitude bring in the French to immerse you more into the culture of this sound. It starts with a bounce of the shoulders and a tap of the foot, and soon you’re spinning in circles keeping up with the accordion. On the very same album, the Blues come to light in Jukebox Songs and give your feet a rest, unless you’re still tapping your foot. Even with a slightly more mellow sound than its counterparts, Jukebox Songs, still, is about the party of the Cajun lifestyle. There is no way to keep your body from moving to this album.
Part of the greatness of Zydeco music is not the liveliness of the music, but the classical culture which embody so many different types of music all at once. The Revelers’ don’t just touch on the Cajun country life, but they completely embody it. You can catch The Revelers in town for this Mardi Gras holiday, in Eunice, and their hometown, Lafayette, Louisiana.
