A student-run organization called formula SAE is building a racecar for a worldwide competition in May. It will consist of racing, business presentations, and cost auditing events. Formula SAE president Matthew Richards said they will compete against 120 teams from around the world in Michigan.
“We’re trying to get top 35 this year we want to finish every event and compete in every event,” said Richards.
When it comes to funding the racecar, the students are on their own. Formula SAE adviser Ingmar Shoegl said he only oversees the project.
“In terms of getting supplies for the car,s the students have to find sponsers and its actually a self supported effort,” said Shoegl.
Students like Matt Mabile show their dedication to the team by working on the race cars almost every day.
“I usually come at 9:00 in the morning leave for meals and we shut down at around 11:00,” said Mabile.
Students involved in Formula SAE gain hands-on experience by creating and calculating formulas for the racecar. Porshe engineer Gary Avery said experience like this looks good to employers.
“Some of our best new hires come from Formula SAE so for us if we are able to cultivate these activities then we get better recruits,” said Avery.
