Nestled in various corners of the New Orleans Convention Center, I saw at least five people who were the spitting image of the eleventh doctor, Matt Smith, and ten others that were trying very hard to do the same.
The most surreal part of the whole convention was how comfortable the cosplayers (people dressed up as characters from comic books or television shows) felt in their respective costumes. It almost seemed as if these people dressed in full garb on a daily basis, and not just for an event such as Comic Con. The attention to detail when creating the character’s persona was so jaw-dropping that the word “costume” doesn’t even really define what event-goers were dressed in.
Today, I also got a look into how large the Dr. Who fanbase really is; Matt Smith was set to make an appearance, and it was clear by the amount of TARDISes (and girls wearing TARDIS dresses) that the vast majority of people in attendance were there for the doctor.
I spent most of the day on the floor (because I spent most of yesterday in panels), and the experience was an entirely new one. There were vendors of all types; some were selling $300 lightsabers, some were showing rare comic books and some were taking pictures of people with the Ghostbusters hearse. The overall experience made for some great pictures and even better video.
