As I sat in the LSUReveille.com newsroom listening to Nick Jonas’ self-titled debut as a solo artist (without his brothers and without The Administration), I couldn’t help but bob my head to almost every track.
If you can picture it, you’re right in assuming I looked like an idiot. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Nick Jonas, which was released on November 10. The mix of pop and soul definitely makes it one of my favorite releases by a solo male artist this year.
Most of us remember Nick best from the Jonas Brothers, arguably the greatest boy band of the past decade (pre-One Direction, that is). However, even from the beginning, it was undeniable that Nick would be the breakout star.
Yes, the Beyoncé of the Jonas Brothers.
Let me count the ways.
1. He was discovered in a barbershop
Hello, Beyonce started out singing for customers in her mom’s hair salon.
2. He’s the youngest of the group
Just like Bey in DC3, Nick is the youngest member of the group. However, his age didn’t keep him from outshining the older members.
3. He has the best hair
With his long curly locks, the short (almost shaved) look, and everything in between, he totally overshadowed Joe and Kevin’s mostly awkward hairstyles. Sure, the other brothers improved over the years, but their emo/scene hair phase is forever seared in my memory in the worst way.
4. His vocals are arguably the best in the family
From the start of the Jonas Brothers’ career, Nick’s vocals outshined that of his brothers. From their earliest songs like “Year 3000” and “When You Look Me In The Eyes,” Nick was given lead parts more often than not. Joe was the only one who could kind of hold a candle to Nick’s vocals. Continuing the Destiny’s Child comparison, you can probably call Joe the Kelly of the group with Kevin holding it down as Michelle.
5. He released the most successful solo album during the JoBros’ pause
In 2010, the Jonas Brothers took a pause and didn’t get back together until their short reunion in 2012. Technically the album Nick released was by Nick Jonas “and the Administration,” but the Administration only consisted of drummers and guitarists with Nick as the lead singer. The first album from Nick, Who I Am, debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 beating his brother Joe whose solo release Fastlife debuted at number 15.
6. He’s the only one from the group that has an acting career worth mentioning
While he co-starred with his brothers on Disney shows like “Hannah Montana,” and “Jonas,” Nick has branched out on programs like “Hawaii 5-0” as well as Broadway plays such as “How To Succeed In Business.” He even flexes his acting muscles as one of the leads in the recent DirectTV drama “Kingdom.”
So, there you have it. The definitive reasoning as to why Nick is the Beyoncé to the Jonas Brothers’ Destiny’s Child.
