After 16 years in the governor’s mansion and nine years in federal prison Edwin Edwards is attempting a comeback for the ages. He is now seeking the sixth congressional seat in Louisiana.
“I just like to serve people and you know what, I like to be in a position where you have the power to make things happen,” Edwards said.
Although he was convicted of a casino bribery scheme after he left office in 2001, Edwards still maintains his innocence.
“And I think people now realize that the trial was nothing but a fraud, the government just wanted to send me to prison. And the governor, i mean the judge, just wanted to send me to prison.”
The last time Edwards sought elected office was in 1991. Back then, his ads appeared on grocery bags and there was only a handful of channels for him to advertise on.
But the candidate has embraced the new media. He recently joined Twitter and this Summer he completed the ice bucket challenge.
With his trademark humor and old school style, Edwards is a throwback to another era. However the question remains.
Will the voters of Louisiana send him back to Washington?
