The amazingly talented Karen O, vocalist for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, released her first solo album this September 2014. Crush Songs is a quiet bedroom soundtrack of love songs; the music seems unfinished and unpolished but Karen O does not disappoint. The vibe is honest, classic, and straightforward. While every song is acoustic, it does not lack Karen O’s eclectic vocals and the powerful presences. Each track is short, the norm less than two minutes, and flows into the next; I found myself going through the entire album without realizing it had ended. There is a sweet but raw emotion that is relational in its work-in-progress quality. Though it received its fair share of disappointed reviews, I believe Karen O beautifully articulated the “love song” in a simplified form.
Crush Songs includes some previously recorded tracks from 2006 and 2007. “When I was 27, I crushed a lot. I wasn’t sure I’d ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They were the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours.”
