Sellout? Never! Released August 5, 2014 They Want My Soul, Spoon’s 8th album to date is the latest LP in their discography. Proving that they haven’t lost their sound to a new label and the masses, Spoon’s new tracks are infused with a softer sound and slightly more romantic lyrics in comparison to their previous work. A collection of 10 tracks, the new album reminds us of just how much Spoon has to give.
Moving from their previous label, Merge, the band collaborated with Joe Chicarelli and Dave Fridmann under Loma Vista Recordings and the resulting sound is a deep, classic, upbeat Spoon sound that reminds us all that they’ve haven’t lost their soul. Packed full of honest lyrics, 43 year old Britt Daniel croons along to drummer Jim Eno’s full beats and unadorned snare. A psychedelic mix of chill synth draws you into songs like Inside Out, Do You, and Knock Knock Knock. Rob Pope, Eric Harvey, and Alex Fishel don’t disappoint either with their meld of deep bass, twangy guitar, and bold, crass piano in songs like I Just Don’t Understand and Outlier. While the band has kept their undeniably familiar sound this album is a much more thoughtful and soulful one, baring a lot of raw emotion.
They Want My Soul almost seems to be a play on words, as the lyrics expose a more personal side of spoon. Without selling out and losing their character, the band seems to open up offering clarity and romantic confessions like “Yeah, there’s intense gravity I’m just your satellite” in Inside Out. Daniel also hits home with some honest lyrics like in their first track Rent I Pay; sympathetic to the everyday struggle, but cognizant that it’s just how life has turned out. In their track, Rainy taxi, a set of sweet lyrics admitting, “when you stand beside me, I could tell I was stronger than I’ve ever been”. However, if that’s too heavy for avid I Turn My Camera On and The Way We Get By fans, their tenth track, New York Kiss, has the signature upbeat spoon sound paired with lyrics reliving a moment where “The feeling hits me clear and sharp”.
For Spoon fans the new album is a must listen. Fans of bands like Vacationer and LCD sound system will also enjoy some of the tracks from this new LP. Overall Spoon proves to us that they haven’t given away their soul; they’ve just opened up to us and given us honesty and good music.
