Television shows give viewers a lot more than entertainment.
A show can give characters we relate to, an escape from reality and, most importantly, fashion inspiration.
One show with monumental effect, not only during its air-time, but through re-runs is the television show “Friends”.
“Friends” brought us episodes we still reference today. It brought us characters we personally relate to and characters we see in people in our own lives. It also brought us a ton of late ‘90s and early ‘00s style.
One particular character whose style is always referenced from the show, is Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green. When the show premiered, everyone remembers the stories of viewers running to their hair salon and asking for “The Rachel”.
While Green’s long, choppy bob would still be acceptable as a haircut today, there’s much more of the character’s style that should be admired.
In the 10 years “Friends” ran, Green’s personal style evolved as she aged, however, certain characteristics stuck. Her style was so simple, it’s incredibly easy to recreate.
Green followed three simple rules: denim, plaid and tight silhouettes.
Denim could be found in the form of shirts, overalls, jeans and skirts in Green’s wardrobe. Denim stays a classic staple and most already have it in their closets, so getting that Green look can simply be done by throwing on a denim shirt with a cotton circle skirt or a pair of short overalls with a crop top underneath.
The next step is plaid.
Throughout the series, Green sports the plaid in the form of flannel shirts and plaid skirts. While plaid skirts go in and out of style, the safe bet is to just use the flannel shirt inspiration since those are constantly an option and always in high demand.
Pair the flannel shirt with a basic tank top or crop top underneath, or use the flannel as an accessory by tying it around your waist. Green is seen wearing both of these styles throughout the show. Wearing the flannel as a shirt gives a casual, cool vibe while tying it around your waist can relax a more dressed up outfit, or just act as instant outerwear when needed.
Finally, Aniston’s character loved anything that came in small sizes. Her dresses and shirts were always body-conscience and she was the queen of the crop top.
This is easy to recreate today with the option of crop tops in almost every store in the mall. Body-con dresses and skirts are also easily accessible and in a neutral color, you’re instantly channeling Green.
To give it a more ‘90s vibe, place a t-shirt crop top underneath the body-con dress or wear a tight skirt with a denim or flannel addition.
Green’s style gives “girl next door” with simple, easy materials. It’s no wonder everybody wanted a relation to “The Rachel”.
