LSU’s cross country teams began the 2014 season at McNeese State’s Cross Country Relay on Friday. Their competition included participants from Louisiana-Lafayette, McNeese State, and Northwestern State.
The Lady Tigers B team, comprised of senior Andria Aguilar and sophomore Morgan Schuetz, won the women’s 6k relay with a time of 19 minutes and 52.58 seconds.
Sophomores Ashley Welborn and Chaiss Matthews made up the A team and finished in second-place with a time of 20:55.00.
Clocking in at 21:25.12, sophomore Danielle Avery and freshman Andrea Maxwell finished in sixth-place for LSU.
Finishing in ninth-place, sophomores Elizabeth Dunning and Jenna Walker posted a time of 22:21.05.
Rounding out the Lady Tigers’ efforts in their freshman debut, Carley Boyce and Rebecca Little placed 11th at 22:36.52.
“[Aguilar] ran really well. Morgan Schuetz and Chaiss Matthews ran well also,” said LSU coach Khadevis Robinson.
In the men’s 8k relay, senior Philip Primeaux and junior Travis Pope came in second-place for LSU. The A team of Primeaux and Pope finished nine seconds behind McNeese’s B team, which finished with a winning time of 25:10:71.
Coming in seventh-place, senior Philip Dempsey and sophomore Blair Henderson clocked in at 26:06.39.
LSU’s D and C teams, consisting of all freshmen, placed ninth and 10th respectively. Bryan Stamey and Daniel Tanner of the D team posted a time of 26:33.68. D.C. Lipani and Jack Wilkes made up the C team and finished 14 seconds behind Stamey and Tanner.
“Bryan Stamey and Jack Wilkes ran well. I expect all of the freshmen to be key contributors this season,” Robinson said.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers next competition will be at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas on September 12th. The women will start at 6:15 pm CDT and the men will start at 6:45 CDT.
