While most LSU students thanked mother nature for providing yet another day off school due to weather, LSU Track and Field refused to rest and finished second only to host Texas A&M this weekend at the Texas A&M Triangular.
The men and women’s teams claimed seven event titles, and LSU recorded 27 combined indoor personal bests this weekend inside Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium. In 15 total events, Texas A&M outpaced both the LSU and Texas Tech’s female units, collecting 140 total points. LSU recorded 94 points and Texas Tech trailed with 80 points.
The LSU won 5 of the 15 events. Senior Nikita Tracey won the women’s 800-meter race, while setting a new personal best at 2:09.86.
Senior Jasmin Stowers beat Texas Tech sophomore Le’Tristan Pledger to win the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.18 seconds. Teammate junior Mariah Georgetown finished slightly behind Stowers and Pledger at 8.42 seconds to earn third place.
The purple and gold’s youthful distance medley team of freshmen Chaiss Matthews (1,200 meters), Morgan Schuetz (400 meters), Danielle Avery (800 meters) and sophomore Andria Aguilar (mile) turned in another impressive performance, winning the competition for the second straight week. The time of 11:53.18 was comprised of three individual personal records from Schuetz, Avery and Matthews.
LSU coach Dennis Shaver said he was pleased with the team’s progress from last week’s Auburn Indoor Invitational. Consistent progress must remain a priority with the indoor season being so short, and SEC Indoors Championship beginning Feb. 27.
“The indoor season comes and goes so quickly, so it’s important to take advantage of every opportunity we have to compete and improve as a team,” Shaver said.
The Texas A&M men lead with 139.5 points, the Tigers scored 90.5 points and Texas Tech finished last with 85 points. The Texas A&M men also turned in an impressive performance to match their female counterparts, with each unit winning 10 events.
The LSU men didn’t match the Lady Tigers’, but the Tigers still clawed to a second place finish.
The Tigers enjoyed the majority of their success in field events in College Station. Senior Joseph Caraway recorded 5.22 meters in pole vault to win the event. Sophomore Fitzroy Dunkley also jumped a combined 15.18 meters to win the men’s triple jump.
After a week of practice, LSU men and women will return to action next Saturday in the New Mexico Team Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
