Glam Rock is a genre and fashion movement that began in the UK (1970s). The ‘start’ is said to begin in 1971 when Marc Bolan of T. Rex went on Top of the Pops dressed in satin and glitter. This genre drew from psychedelic and art rock. It’s theatrical, costumes, makeup, camp, and overall fun.
David Bowie created a character called Ziggy Stardust during this era and also made a film featuring Ziggy (many glam rock artists also did this). There was a subgenre called Glitter Rock– led by Gary Glitter– which is a more extreme, darker version of Glam.
But wait there’s more!
Glam Metal (also known as hair metal) began in 1981. It is a more US take on things, as Glam Rock never truly caught on there (except for David Bowie). Glam Metal quickly saw commercials success thanks to MTV’s music video programming and the power ballads.
This genre still was in the same spirit of flashy clothes and androgynous looks. Bon Jovi’s 1986 alum Slippery When Wet is credited for broadening the genre’s audience. Finally, Glam Metal declined in the 90s as audiences became more interested in the grunge sound…. To be continued…..
